Our Award for the best 'Budget' LCD TV goes to....the Samsung LN-T4061F

Have you decided to upgrade your old TV set with a new LCD HDTV, but don't want to spend your entire life's savings to get one? Also... how do you decide between all the different makes and models out there to make sure you're getting a great product with good value? Don't worry, this was our task for this article.

Our goal was simple. We set out to find a television set that could offer great picture quality, excellent standard features and a price tag that fits nicely in the lower budget arena. We wanted to find a set that proved you did not have to give up quality just because you were on a budget. Our research led us straight to a standout model, the Samsung LNT4061F. With a great list of features and excellent performance reviews, we were sold.

What's Good

First, let’s get a closer look at some of the features that the Samsung LNT4061F has to offer:

• 40 inch LCD screen
• Full 1080p resolution
• 10,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio
• HDMI 1.3 inputs
• Strong picture controls

Ok, you’ve heard about these features before, but how exactly do they enhance your viewing experience? The 1080p resolution is often referred to as full HDTV video. In a nutshell, the 1080p delivers a high resolution picture quality. Smooth edges and crisp visuals are the order of the day here.

10,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio means that you can show off your new LCD TV to friends. The screen can display both bright and dark colors without the grainy, or muddy blending you may have seen on previous generation sets.

So what exactly is an HDMI 1.3 input? In and of itself, it doesn’t mean a whole lot. However, with the proper input device (Such as your player and the disk itself); the Samsung will deliver colors that remain true, and closer to the human eye’s capability. Keep an eye on this feature (No pun intended) as you may be hearing more about it soon.

We listed “strong picture controls” as a feature we liked above. The Samsung LNT4061F offers three picture modes that allow you to really customize your viewing experience. We really enjoyed the “Only Movie” mode as it allowed us full control. Everything from contrast and brightness, all the way to backlight control was available. It’s rare to have such detailed adjustment features at this level and in this price range. You can really dial in your personal preference for even the most demanding of viewers.

What's Bad

This Samsung performed great for us, but now we have to pull out the microscope and nitpick a bit. We only do this so that you have all the available facts when making your purchasing decisions.

Sound  – While technically this set uses the same audio technology we’ve seen in other Samsung models we have tested, the sound was a little on the weak side for us. It didn’t have the same full, room filling effect we would have liked.

Viewing angle – As you’d expect from an LCD, the screen is quite brilliant and rich. However, at certain viewing angles the image did weaken moderately, and for some this may be a problem.

Factory Settings – We’ve run into this before. When you first take this set out of the box, you may have to fiddle with the controls quite a bit to find a setting you like. The Samsung offers a huge array of adjustment features, so some may find this frustrating to really dial in the perfect setting if you just want to “plug and play.”
