Projection Lamp / DLP bulbs for HDTV
Learn How To Increase the Life Expectancy of Your DLP Lamps for HDTV
Imagine sitting down infront of your rear or front projection TV ready to watch
the big game and then suddenly.....no picture! Your projection lamp burnt out! That could get very frustrating. Dlp Lamps for HDTV are often
not even considered when purchasing a projection TV and completely forgotten about until it's too late. That's why it's always a good idea
to keep an extra replacement lamp for DLP television on hand.
DLP projectors for rear or front projection HDTV’s have four main components: a color wheel, a DMD chip, a light, and optics (i.e. lots of
little mirrors). The most vulnerable part of the projector is the light, which must be replaced periodically. DLP lamps for HDTV vary in quality
from 1500 hour to 8000+ hour lamps. Ease of replacement varies just as much. Most DLP bulbs for HDTV’s can be replaced by the owner, but
some need to be replaced and recalibrated by a technician.
Although most people wouldn’t think of it as a positive feature, the fact that you can replace DLP lamps for HDTV’s is an advantage. DLP bulbs
cost around $200 or more, and when you replace the bulb, the TV functions like new. When an LCD or plasma TV starts going dim, about the only
thing you can do with it is look for a replacement. So, even if you have to hire a technician to do it, it’s a cost-effective repair.
If you own a DLP HDTV, you want the lamp to last as long as possible, of course. When you purchased your TV, the salesman probably told you
how long the bulb will last. That is only a very rough estimate; there is no way to predict how long any given bulb will last. A lot of different
factors affect the life of DLP lamps for HDTV. It’s probably a good idea to keep an extra DLP bulb on hand just in case you need it.
Environmental factors can affect how long your DLP bulb lasts. If the TV is in a warm, poorly ventilated area, the bulb will get hotter and
burn out faster than it needs to. Ensuring adequate ventilation and keeping the TV away from sunny windows and heat sources can make your bulb
last longer.
Your DLP TV has air filters that need to be cleaned regularly. Dirty, clogged air filters make the TV overheat and decrease the life of your
bulb. Most manufacturers recommend cleaning your filters monthly.
You can increase the life of your DLP bulb by turning down the brightness setting too. That doesn’t mean you should watch dim TV, but the TV
probably came with the brightness set to maximum. That’s because that is the best showroom setting. Your TV room might not need that much
brightness. If you can turn the brightness down without sacrificing picture quality, you’ll extend the life of your bulb.
Your warranty may cover DLP lamp replacement. If not, you may be able to purchase additional lamp replacement coverage. If your HDTV has a
user-replaceable lamp, the directions should be in your owner’s manual. (When purchasing a DLP HDTV, check to see if you can replace the lamp
without voiding any warranties.)
Most of the time DLP lamp replacement is not too difficult. If you don’t have the owner’s manual, you can probably find both a replacement
lamp for DLP television and directions on how to replace it on the internet.
