We Review TH-42PX77U by Panasonic

Find Out Why It's One of the Best Budget Plasma TVs

 written March 2008

So you’re in the market for a great new television set and you want the best bang for your buck right? Then you’ve come to the right place to guide you through the process of selecting the TV set that is right for you. Instead of wading through all the claims, brochures and display stands, you can take a front row seat to our review of one of the best values on the market today - the Panasonic TH-42PX77U.

What Impressed Us

Panasonic's latest offering allows consumers to enjoy the benefits of owning a plasma TV without breaking the figurative piggy bank. It represents a giant leap forward in quality and affordability for the average consumer. Here's what you get:

  • 42 inch Plasma Screen
  • 720p Display Resolution
  • 10000:1 Contrast Ratio
  • Accurate Color
  • Superior Black Reproduction
  • Excellent Anti-glare Screen

The 42 inch plasma screen is just about the perfect size for your average consumer. While many seem to feel that “bigger is better” when it comes to TVs, you must select the proper size screen for the maximum viewing pleasure. 42 inches is an excellent size that is not too big, nor too small for the average size living room or game room.

The 720p resolution is perfect as a 1080p resolution for this size set would not be noticeable but will likely increase the price quite a bit. The Color delivered by the Panasonic is excellent. Brilliant colors are displayed with an efficiency and accuracy that is rarely seen within this price range. The same applies to this set's ability to deliver a deep, inky black that plasma TVs have become famous for.

Plasma TVs certainly deliver an excellent picture, but many have found themselves a bit on the frustrated side when trying to view the screen in a brightly lit room. The large glass screen on most televisions reflects light easily, thus creating distracting glares. Panasonic has done an excellent job with their latest anti-glare feature making the TH-42px77u a great choice if you're planning on placing it in a room with lots of natural light.

What We Didn't Like

No television is perfect. As always we like to present you with a completely balanced view of our selection by showing both sides of the:

  • Slightly Greenish Tint
  • Only 2 HDMI Inputs
  • Too Easy to Delete Settings

This Panasonic really impressed us with its excellent color accuracy and beautiful blacks. However, we did notice a bit of a slightly, barely noticeable green tint in some scenes. This is common with most sets though, and you really have to look hard to notice.

We were a bit disappointed that Panasonic only gave us 2 HDMI inputs this time around, when many competitors are now offering 3, as well as a PC input. This set is a bit stingy on its connections, but it does offer enough to keep most of us happy.

One more minor complaint we had was with how easy it was to delete the custom settings. Once you find that ideal setting, it’s easy to forget the exact adjustments. See, there is a setting labeled as “normal” that when selected, will return to default setting while deleting your hard earned settings. This can be quite frustrating.
