Kind of Widescreen TV Stand
Buying a Home Entertainment Center:
Interior designers talk about the "focal point" of a room, and they always want to make the
fireplace the focal point, or a great view, or a piece of art. Everybody knows, however, that if there is a television in the room, that’s the
real focal point. And it will always compete with whatever your designer thinks the focal point should be. Unless... you make it part of the
design with a home entertainment center.
Even though most people have had television sets for the past half-century, they’ve been pretty well ignored in interior design. They sit on a
TV stand looking out of place, or get hidden in a cabinet. When you have a big screen TV, it’s pretty hard to hide it. When it’s a beautiful
plasma or LCD flat panel television, you don’t want to hide it. Why not make it a centerpiece, part of the room’s design? That’s what putting it
in the right big screen entertainment center does.
Here are some tips for choosing a Home Entertainment Center:
Remember that, functionally, a home entertainment center is an organization tool. Aesthetically, you want it to be a beautiful piece of
furniture.
Measure the space your entertainment center will occupy. This is usually a pretty good-sized piece of furniture, and you probably won’t be
moving it around a lot.
Inventory all of your audio-video equipment. Inventory your CD’s, videos, DVD’s and other media.
Decide exactly what you need and want. Some questions to ask yourself are:
Once you’ve decided about function, look at your room’s design. Your entertainment center should be part of the design of the
room. Consider the following:
- What style is my room? Contemporary?—your entertainment center should have clean lines, be uncluttered and simple and perhaps have be
black or metallic. Traditional?—you’ll lean more toward wood and architectural details.
- What colors do I use in the room? Most purchased entertainment centers you will find are wood-tones, black, metallic or white. Decide
what fits best into your room. If you don’t like any of the options and you’re a bit adventurous, paint is cheap and easy to do.
- What details work in my room? Do you use lots of glass?—maybe you want glass cabinet doors. Are there brass lamps in the room?—look at
brass drawer pulls and cabinet handles.
- What lighting do I need in the entertainment center? Lighting is not only practical and functional, but it is also a major design
component.
When you are ready to purchase a home entertainment center, look for quality. Make sure the cabinet doors swing smoothly and hang evenly.
Check that drawers slide easily and feel solid. Check the finish. How are handles and drawer pulls attached? How are shelves supported? Is the
piece solid wood or laminate, or paper-covered press board?
If you don’t find a home entertainment center that suits your room and meets your organizational requirements, you do have other options. At
the higher end, you can have someone custom design and build your home entertainment center. At the lower end, you can custom design and build
your own, perhaps from a kit.
A home entertainment center is a major piece of furniture. It will be a visual focus in the room. A well-designed, functional and beautiful
entertainment center brings your television and other media equipment into its rightful place as an important part of your living space.
