Plasma TV Wall Mounts / LCD TV mounts

How Do You Attach an LCD to the Wall? Try Using an Articulating Flat Panel TV Mount for the Most Viewing Flexibility

One of the cool things about the new flat panel television sets is that you can hang them on a wall (by using plasma TV wall mounts / LCD TV mounts). They are narrow—sometimes only a few inches deep—and attractive, and they look as good hanging on your wall as a picture. You can even use some to display a slide show of your favorite photos.

Viewing a wall-mounted TV can be another story altogether. Although most flat panel TV’s have decent horizontal viewing angles, not all have good vertical viewing angles. You can get picture distortion if they are placed above eye level, not to mention the crick in your neck. One way to fix that problem is to use an articulating flat panel TV wall mount. It allows you to pull the TV out from the wall, lower it, tilt it and rotate it into the ideal viewing position.

So, how do you attach an LCD to the wall? First you have to purchase the right wall mount, probably an articulating flat panel TV mount. You can’t just glue a picture hanger on the back of a flat panel TV and hang it from a nail in the wall. These television sets are much lighter than the old big screen TV’s, but they still weigh a hefty 70 pounds or more. Plus, they have to be plugged in to power and, perhaps, to your component system.

Before you go shopping for a wall mount, decide where you want to hang the TV. It will be semi-permanently attached to the wall; you’re not going to be moving it around. Then decide where you will watch it from. Decide if you want the TV to be mounted flush with the wall, or if it needs to tilt or rotate in any way. Write down your brand and model number, the screen size and the weight of your television set, and you are ready to go shopping.

You will find a large variety of plasma TV wall mounts and LCD TV mounts. Some are called "fixed mounts," and they keep the television set fixed in one place. Some tilt or rotate. Some fold up and down. Articulating flat panel TV mounts give you the most viewing flexibility. The best TV wall mounts are VESA (video electronics standards association) compatible or VESA mounts.

Once you’ve decided on a TV wall mount you can decide if you want to have it professionally installed or DIY. It’s a project most reasonably handy people can manage, but you will be pulling wires and relocating an electrical box (unless, of course, you have no objection to cords and wires stretched all over your wall, and nobody you live with does, either.) Remember that the TV has some weight to it, and it needs to be mounted on studs. You will probably want to relocate your cable connection and perhaps a component connection behind the TV, along with an electrical connection.

Mounting your flat panel TV on the wall—especially if you use an articulating flat panel TV mount—gives you the best viewing flexibility and a beautiful aesthetic presentation of your beautiful television set. You don’t want to hide these TV’s in an armoire; you want to display them as well as watch them.
